Abstract

The effect of acetylcholine on the contraction of smooth muscle on external Ca++ was studied using canine ileal smooth muscle strips.
This was studied by the effect of acetylcholine on the PSS (physiological saline solution), Ca++-free solution and pretreatment of papaverine.
1. Acetylcholine caused marked contraction of canine ileal smooth muscles, and the cortractile responses were increased between the concentration of acetylcholine 5x10-10M and 5X 10-5M with dose-dependent manner.
2. Acetylcholine caused poor contraction of canine ileal smooth muscle on the Ca++-free solution and initial contraction on the 5 x 10-9M acetylcholine.
3. The contractile responses of acetylcholine were powerfully inhibited by the pretreatment of papaverine.
Considering above results, it seems that both internal Ca++ and external Ca++ is utilized on contraction of acetylcholine in canine ileal smooth muscle.
